United States Military History-War of Independence to Civil War United States Military History-Civil War United States Military History--Post-Civil War United States Military History-Spanish-American War United States Military History-Interventionism, 1895-1934 United States Military History-Post-World War II Nontraditional Military Operations Strategy Tactics Theory Wars The mission of the United States Army is to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. The Army does this by deterring war and, when deterrence fails, by achieving quick, decisive victory--on and off the battlefield--anywhere in the world and under virtually any conditions as part of a joint team. 1993 edition. These words from FM 100-5 show the scope of the challenges facing the leaders of today's Army. The Army must be organized, trained, and equipped to carry out operations all along the spectrum of missions, from conventional large-scale combat operations to operations other than war. It must be prepared to act decisively in any place at any time when called upon by our nation's leaders. Developing and maintaining an army capable of performing such a wide range of missions would not be easy under any circumstances. The world is a complex place with diverse political, social, economic, cultural, geographical, climatological, and military environments. Adding to this complexity is change. Both domestically and internationally, political, social, and economic developments that will have an enormous impact on when, where, and how the Army will fight or conduct operations other than war are occurring. Technological progress is simultaneously creating obsolescence and new opportunities. If the Army is to remain effective, Army leaders must be aware of the world about them and why and how it is changing. This is a prerequisite for effective planning for the future. Knowledge is power. With knowledge, Army leaders will have a basis for understanding the present and developing a vision for the future. They will be able to cope with change and perhaps even shape it. How can knowledge, understanding, and vision be obtained? There is no simple answer, but reading and serious reflection on the experiences and ideas of others are essential parts of the process. That is why the Combat Studies Institute (CSI) of the US. Army Command and General Staff College has prepared this list of books. The intention is to help members of the profession of arms grow professionally and personally by providing this key to information, insights, and collective wisdom. The books on this list are grouped under subject headings that are generally arranged in alphabetical order. An exception is the chronological arrangement of subject headings under the broad subject categories Military History--European and Military History--United States. Within specific subject areas the books are arranged according to the alphabetical order of their authors' names. In a number of cases books could be listed under more than one heading, but on this list they only appear once. For example, Giulio Douhet's The Command of the Air is a theoretical book on air power. It is listed under air power, not theory. Some of the books listed are out of print, but all are still available in libraries. This list of books, of course, is by no means exhaustive. The titles included were selected by CSI faculty members with an eye to providing a representative number of high quality works across a broad spectrum of subjects. It is our hope that you who use this list will find it to be a useful guide to professional reading and a stimulus to expand your horizons. Gary J. Bjorge Combat Studies Institute Brodie, Bernard.
